Betty Gilpin will take over the lead role in Oh, Mary! on Broadway this winter.

Gilpin, an Emmy nominee for her role in Netflix’s Glow, takes over the role of Mary Todd Lincoln from Cole Escola starting Jan. 21 for an eight-week run through March 16. The play has also released a new block of tickets, extending the Broadway run through at least June 28, 2025.

Escola wrote the play and has starred in the show since its off-Broadway run, which began in January 2024. The play, directed by Sam Pinkleton, reimagines Mary Todd Lincoln as a petulant, wannabe cabaret star dreaming to get away from her husband and the White House. Since opening on Broadway in July 2024, the show has been selling out and has broken the box office record at the Lyceum Theatre 10 times.

In addition to her role as Debbie Eagan/Liberty Belle in Glow, Gilpin starred opposite Shailene Woodley in the Starz limited series Three Women and starred in the Peacock series Mrs. Davis. She has also appeared Off Broadway in Atlantic Theater Company’s 2015 production of I’m Gonna Pray For You So Hard, Signature Theatre’s 2012 production of Heartless and more. This will be Gilpin’s Broadway debut.

“I have worshiped at the altar of Cole for years, but seeing their billion layered brilliance in Oh, Mary! was a new plane of demented genius I didn’t know was scientifically possible,” Gilpin said. “I am beyond honored to step in so that Cole can get back to tending their neglected passions: fracking and skincare. Diving in with the perfect Sam Pinkleton to play Mary will be one of the single greatest joys of my life, and I will say that to my two daughters’ faces.”

Escola added, “I could not be more excited to see what Betty Gilpin does with the role of Mary. She’s a brilliant comedic actress who understands the heart of this character and knows the serious business of being a fool. I promise, you won’t want to miss Betty as Mary.”

In addition to Escola, the production currently stars Conrad Ricamora as Mary’s husband, James Scully as Mary’s teacher, Bianca Leigh as Mary’s chaperone and Tony Macht as Mary’s husband’s assistant.
